A tree belonging to the mahogany family and is known as the “free tree” because of its ability to “free the soil.” Latinized name Azadirachta indica is derived from the Persian. Azad means “free” and dirakht means “tree,” and i-Hind means “Indian origin”- together meaning “the free tree of India.”

Popular in the Philippines, more for its insecticidal properties than for its medicinal applications.

Young tender branches are chewed for toothbrushing use. Twigs are also used as oral deodorant, to relieve toothache, and for cleaning the teeth. Because of this extracts from this tree are used in the manufacture of toothpaste for its antibacterial properties.

In some areas, the burning of leaves and seeds is used as a mosquito repellent. Fresh seed oil has a strong garlic odor and is used as an ingredient for insect sprays.
