Assoc. Prof. Ivan Nava Villespin, MD, MBA, FPCP, FPCCP, FCCP, is a distinguished expert in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine with a keen focus on Pulmonary Vascular Diseases. Dr. Villespin earned his Doctor of Medicine from UST Faculty of Medicine & Surgery in 1980. He subsequently completed a Residency in Internal Medicine and a Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at UST Hospital. His commitment to continuous learning led him to pursue a Post Doctoral Fellowship in Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine with a subspecialty in Pulmonary Vascular Diseases at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), USA, from 1988-1990. Equipped with a Master of Business Administration Major in Health from Ateneo Graduate School of Business, Dr. Villespin seamlessly integrates medical expertise with a strategic healthcare perspective. He has garnered numerous accolades, including the prestigious Presidential Award for his contributions to Philippine COVID-19 Living Clinical Practice Guidelines. In his illustrious career, Dr. Villespin held significant roles, such as President of the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (2020-2021), Founding Chair of the Council on Pulmonary Vascular Diseases, and Chief Program Officer at USTFMS Office of Continuing Medical Education. For his outstanding contribution to the academe and medical profession, unselfishly imparting his expertise in the field of Pulmonary Vascular Medicine to students and fellow physicians, Dr. Villespin was awarded the PCCP Most Outstanding Fellow Award in 2022. Additionally, he led the College at the most uncertain and critical moments of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a committed professional, he continues to contribute actively as an Active Consultant at UST Hospital and a Visiting Consultant in Pulmonary Vascular Medicine at the Lung Center of the Philippines. Dr. Villespin’s unwavering dedication to medical education and research is evident through his dynamic leadership in various positions and professional affiliations, making him a beacon in the field of Pulmonary Medicine.

His work encompasses a wide range of topics, including pressure-flow relationships in canine models of chronic pulmonary arterial thrombotic obstruction, impedance plethysmography, and the effects of chronic thromboembolism on pulmonary artery pressure-flow relationships. Presenting his findings at prestigious conferences such as the American Thoracic Society Annual Meeting, Dr. Villespin has shared insights on topics like the role of impedance plethysmography in venous thromboembolism and the clinical profile and outcomes of COVID-19 patients. Moreover, Dr. Villespin’s creative outputs include manuals and educational materials aimed at enhancing medical education and patient care. Notably, he has contributed as an associate editor to the Comprehensive Guide to Physical Examination. He has developed resources such as the Problem-Oriented Medical Record guideline and the Junior Intern’s Portfolio. As an Executive Producer and Scriptwriter, Dr. Villespin has also produced an audiovisual presentation titled “The History of Thrombosis in the Philippines,” shedding light on the historical context of thrombosis in the region. Through his diverse research endeavors and creative outputs, Dr. Ivan Nava Villespin continues to advance knowledge in Pulmonary Vascular Disorders while contributing to medical education and patient care.
