TENEDERO, Pia Patricia P.

Pia Patricia P. Tenedero is assistant professor at the Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Letters and associate researcher at the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education of the University of Santo Tomas (UST), Manila, the Philippines. She is honorary post-doctoral graduate of the Linguistics Department of Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, where she completed her PhD in Linguistics supported by an international research scholarship grant from the Australian Government and Macquarie University. She convenes units for graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in the English Language Studies program of UST. She is also part of the editorial board of the Asian Journal of English Language Studies. Her teaching and research are mainly in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, intercultural communication, English language use and learning in globalized and professional contexts. Her academic advocacy includes accessible research communication, such as through research blogging. Besides publishing in indexed journals, she also writes about her research in the international, peer-reviewed sociolinguistic research blog .Ìý

Research Highlights

  • Pia published a monograph about the communication practices and ideologies of Filipino globalized accountants titled “Communication that counts: Language practice and ideology in globalized accounting.†This book, which is based on her PhD dissertation, is the first in the Language at Work series of the Multilingual Matters (Bristol, UK) that explores the language practices and ideologies in the highly number-centric and increasingly globalized field of accounting.ÌýÌý
  • She convened an English for Specific Purposes elective for accounting majors of the University of Santo Tomas called Communicating for Globalized Accounting. This elective, which was offered beginning AY2022-2023, is a curricular innovation informed by her PhD work.
  • She also converted her PhD project into a webinar on corporate writing for accountants, which has been deployed as a unit for the Continuing Professional Development of Certified Public Accountants in the Philippines.Ìý
  • She advocates making research communication more accessible to a wider audience by blogging about her research in the peer-reviewed, international, sociolinguistics research blog .Ìý
  • She is the first member-delegate representing a Philippine university (UST) in the Next Generation Literacies Network, an international research network from the tripartite partnership of Macquarie University (Australia), Fudan University (China), and Hamburg University (Germany).Ìý
  • She has served as the Research Interest Group Lead for Language Studies in the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education since 2022.
