David, Pioquinto, two Eng’g alumni receive grants to study in Australia

Engr. Hyson Peter David of the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) is the Australia Awards scholarship candidate to receive a scholarship for the June 2017 intake, while Engr. Rocel Pioquinto of the Department of Civil Engineering (CE) is the candidate for the Commission on Higher Education – Australia Awards (CHED-AA) scholarship. Two graduate students from the Master’s Program in Chemical Engineering, which is jointly offered by UST and Curtin University (CU) on “1+1” dual-diploma Program, Engr. Charles Michael M. Hernandez and Engr. Michael Allan G. Ramos, also passed screening to become AA scholarship recipients candidate. Both are graduates of the Chemical Engineering Program of the Faculty of Engineering.

Engr. David graduated from the EE Department in 2013, magna cum laude, and joined the Department as an Instructor in 2014. He is the EE Department’s representative to the Engineering International Relations and Programs (EIRP) Committee, and one of the coaches of the award-winning EE Quiz Team. He wishes to specialize in Smart Grid Technology in his Master’s studies.

Meanwhile, Engr. Pioquinto graduated from the CE Department in 2014, summa cum laude. She started teaching as a part-time faculty member right after graduation, and then joined Fluor Daniel, Inc. Philippines for a year before returning to teach full-time in the Faculty of Engineering in 2016. She is the first recipient of the CHED-AA scholarship, and she plans to use this opportunity to gain specialization in Structural Engineering in Australia.

Engr. Hernandez and Engr. Ramos completed their course work for their Master’s Program in UST as San Miguel Foundation scholars. They are currently working as consultants in San Miguel Corporation while they await commencement of the second year of their Program at the CU Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia in July 2017.

Upon completion of acceptance process to their respective Australian universities, they shall fulfill their candidacy requirements to become full-fledged scholars and begin their studies in July 2017. The four Thomasian Engineers will then comprise the latest addition to the growing number of AA scholarship recipients from the Faculty of Engineering.
