During the August 4, 2023 Opening Ceremonies for Academic Year 2023-2024, the vision for the UST General Santos City branch as an Integrated Innovation Agritech campus was revealed by Academician Professor Maribel G. Nonato, PhD, the year’s speaker for the traditional Discurso de Apertura.

The framework of CARE

In her lecture, Nonato used the word care and transformed the same into several acronyms that show what developing a 21st-century university needs. Citing factors such as management, human capital, and research, Nonato envisioned a modern university to be a “Comprehensive Academic and Research Enterprise” whose programs are rolled out by “Competent Advanced-degree and Research-oriented Educators.”

Citing the most recent jobs report of the World Economic Forum, Nonato zeroed in on the effects of automation on clerical and secretarial roles that are seen to decline in demand, and the importance of education, agriculture, and digital commerce and trade, which conversely are seen “to have large-scale job growth.”

The incumbent Assistant to the Rector for General Santos stated that “CARE may also be adopted by the human capital of the academic institution. Presence of CARE in in the human, structural and relational capitals will surely lead to a sustainable and successful operations of the academic institution. Harmony of the concept of CARE will demonstrate significant convergence of knowledge and services leading to a resilience university.”

Integrated innovation in Mindanao

Nonato unveiled the collective vision of UST General Santos City to be a campus that runs on an integrated innovation framework. This framework, according to the pioneer research of the Pandanus plant, ”involves diversity where people of different disciplines with common aspiration (Intention) are brought together to cultivate ideas (Ideation) that will generate (Invention) innovative products, services, and processes (Synnovation) which will improve the quality of lives of the community (Transformation).”

The UST General Santos campus will soon open and will initially offer degree programs related to business, health, engineering, information technology, and the sciences. Located on an 80-hectare lot, the campus will soon have the inauguration of the expansive UST General Santos Main Building.

Nonato, UST’s first-ever Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation, is a seasoned researcher and academic who pioneered phytochemistry research for the Pandanus species. A longtime Professor of Chemistry, she has received recognitions both here and abroad for her researches. After her retirement, she was appointed Assistant to the Rector for General Santos.

Ƶ of Santo Tomas recently secured industry funding from leading global management consulting, technology services, and outsourcing company Accenture, in an agreement inked between the two parties early this month. The awarding of the grant was formalized on August 24, 2021, through a virtual event organized by Accenture and attended by University officials, led by Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Maribel G. Nonato, PhD. Leading the Accenture team in the presser was Ms. Ambe Tierro, Accenture Technology Lead for the Philippines and Asia-Pacific.

Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Maribel G. Nonato, PhD accepts the grant on behalf of UST. She is joined by Accenture Technology Lead for the Philippines and Asia-Pacific Ambe Tierro and Accenture Technology in the Philippines Innovation Head Arvin Yason.

Accenture’s Innovation Head Arvin Yason said that for UST, the grant will focus on 5G and Industry Innovation initiatives. The company is also partnering with UST to fund startups related to healthcare. These initiatives are part of the three-pronged aim of Accenture: scaling adoption of new technologies critical for innovation, expanding the academe/incubator network, and amplifying innovation through greater inclusion and diversity.

The Industry Innovation Collaboration Space initiative aims to “setup…a learning facility in the UST España campus that will promote the use of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and Extended Reality capabilities that will be used in the facilitation of teaching courses that are part of the academic curriculum but could also be used in collaborating on cross-disciplinary activities…that will foster innovation and exploration of these new technologies.” The newly minted College of Information and Computing Sciences (CICS) will be in-charge of this.

According to CICS Dean Jerralyn T. Padua, the laboratory will support the further integration on ubiquitous computing in the CICS curricula, specifically for Information Technology’s IT Automation courses and Computer Science’s Artificial Intelligence courses, as this is expected to provide a test bed where all theories and concepts can be realized into practical applications. Going beyond CICS, the IoT lab will also be helpful for various disciplines, such as robotics, agriculture, health, and medicine, which makes it a hub for inter- and multidisciplinary collaborations among the disciplines in UST.

The grant also aims to help the country’s efforts toward technology innovation, as half of the grant will be used to support technology start-ups of the DOST-TOMASINNO Center. Specifically, the grant, according to DOST-TOMASINNO Center Manager Raymond Marquez, will help the projects of at least four incubatees whose innovations are geared toward healthcare.

After paving the way for other studies on the Pandan leaves in Southeast Asia, University of Santo Tomas Vice Rector for Research and Innovation and Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Prof. Maribel G. Nonato, Ph.D., was honored by her advisee Dr. Christina Tan, by naming a newly discovered Pandan species after her — Freycinetia nonatoi.

In a paper published on August 18, 2020, Dr. Christina Tan, of the UST Graduate School and the UST Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences, and Dr. Ary P. Keim, of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences – Research Centre for Biology, detailed their discovery in Llavac, Quezon Province of a “climbing pandan of moderate size; auricle lobed with conspicuous spines on margin; color of bracts bright yellow.”

Regarding the etymology, the authors wrote, “We name this species in honor of Professor Maribel G. Nonato of the University of Santo Tomas (Luzon, Philippines), who has been conducting research on the phytochemistry of pandans for decades. She is the adviser of [Tan].”

Freycinetia nonatoi, from the family Pandanaceae, is endemic to Luzon, and grows in lowland tropical rainforests.

ExperTalk Online

On September 2, Nonato, a distinguished scientist, was a guest in the “ExperTalk Online” series in the Department of Science and Technology’s “DOSTv” channel. In the 23-minute episode, she discussed with the host Ms. Gel Miranda the medicinal uses of Pandanus amaryllifolius, which is locally known as pandang mabango.

Nonato shared that she first became interested in studying pandan when she was working on her doctoral studies at the University of Wollongong in the early 90s. She expressed an interest in studying endemic Philippine plants, one of which was P. amaryllifolius, used in cooking white rice and kakanin (Filipino snacks commonly made of glutinous rice). As she later expanded her investigation into the different species in the Pandanus genus, Nonato found that some are potential sources of antimicrobials, diuretics, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory agents.

While pandang mabango is already being used as a traditional herbal diuretic by boiling its leaves in water and drinking it as tea, Nonato cautioned that the other medicinal properties in its compounds can only be extracted through the proper scientific processes and that such teas are more preventive supplements, not curative.

“Currently, we are looking at what we call ‘endemic species’ or types of Pandanus that can only be found in the Philippines, and we found that there are really some species with anti-inflammatory properties. We also correlate our results with the claims of the surrounding community [on the medicinal properties of Pandan leaves] through ethno-botanical studies. First, we search for Pandan species within the country and then we ask the surrounding community ‘Do you use this? How and for what purposes?’ We documented those details, too. From there, we correlated their claims with the results of our tests on the leaves.

On November 15, 2019, the University of Santo Tomas and the Department of Science and Technology launched the DOST – TOMASInno Center, a technology business incubator (TBI), making UST join the list of thirty-three institutions housing TBIs. The new center was soft-launched in the Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, O.P. Building, where a two-level center will be formally opened in early 2020.

According to , the innovation center aims to help UST’s academic programs by not only providing an avenue to utilize research outputs, but more so open in the students the prospect of becoming entrepreneurs. “We want to change the mindset that we earn degrees to be employees.

We want them to realize that with the innovations and commercialization of their products or technologies, they can also become employers.” The center likewise serves as an answer to the need for not just research publications and dissemination, but more so utilization. In his message of support during the event, Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) Deputy Executive Director Raul Sabularse expressed his hope that with UST now joining the ranks of 33 TBIs, the establishment of more startup ecosystems will be intensified.

“A TBI is both a venue and strategy [that provides] engagement [between the academe and industry] in manner that is meaningful and productive.” Sabularse recognized that while the academe’s mandate is to teach and educate and the industry’s main goal is to earn profit, the TBI serves as a venue to bridge this seeming gap and place the two in a discussion united around common interests. “I would like to believe that the best place to do it is in the academe, because you are doing researches.

If industry does not innovate, they will die because new and better products and services will enter the market,” Sabularse said.

Convergence of disciplines

The center also aims to promote the practice of common and shared laboratories, where people from the different disciplines can use the same equipment and bring to the project their own skills and talents. “We don’t want them to exist in silos. We have to accept that our own areas of expertise need to come together in order to make sure that our ideas translate to usable technologies and products that the public will benefit from.” Initially, the Center will focus on the University’s niche areas of health sciences, natural products for health and wellness, biomedical devices, bioengineering, information and communication technology apps, and food technology, capitalizing on the strength of UST in these areas, as demonstrated by faculty researchers’ expertise and recognitions.

An integrative Catholic formation that cuts across specializations

In an interview with the , the Rector, , said that the business dimension of the TBI will receive the same integrative Catholic education that the University provides within the walls of the academe. “Our Catholic education is integrative. Even with the TBI, our moral compass remains the same [for it] cuts across everything, wherever you are or whatever you are.”

The Rector said that the initiative is in line with the concept of technohubs, which provide a platform “to encourage the students and also our faculty to innovate and help them discover the economic value of their innovations.

This is a center that will help make a research work become a tangible reality.” Going beyond the walls Apart from literally being outside the University’s original Sampaloc campus, the Center, which is located in the Ground and Mezzanine Floors of the new Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati Building, the center’s services will be open to students, faculty researchers, alumni, the industry, and the general public. UST’s DOST – TOMASInno Center will have ideation rooms, 3D printers, as well as work stations for each of the projects that the center will host. As for the fabrication laboratories, the TBI will partner with the Faculty of Engineering.

Leading the team are Engr. Raymond A. Marquez, MBA (TBI Manager) and (TBI Assistant Manager). Four agreements inked The event likewise saw the ceremonial signing of four agreements with government and industry partners. Representing the University were Fr. Dagohoy, Nonato, and Marquez. The first agreement signed formalized the UST and DOST-PCIEERD partnership through a memorandum of understanding.

The Innovation Center is made possible through a research grant from the DOST-PCIEERD, which manages the Technology Business Incubation program of the government. The inclusion of UST in the grants received from DOST was made possible through the Higher Education Institution Readiness for Innovation and Technopreneurship (HeIRIT) program, a DOST-PCIEERD project implemented by the University of the Philippines through the National Engineering Center and UP Enterprise. Representing DOST-PCIEERD were Sabularse, Russell Pili (Chief Science Research Specialist), and Engr. Al Beato and Ms. Ann Kristelle Icuspit (Project Leaders).

Three agreements were likewise inked with industry partners, with initiatives ranging from licensing, to education, and research initiatives. Representatives of the Jollibee Group Foundation, Inc. namely, Ms. Belen Rillo (Vice-President), Ms. Gisela Tiongson (Executive Director), and Ms. Sharleen Alayat (Program Officer), were on hand to sign the agreement with UST, which is one of the two private universities it partnered with for the Learning Express – Farmer Entrepreneurship Program (LEx – FEP). The Lex-FEP is an initiative of JGFI, in partnership with Singapore Polytechnic University.

The project will allow UST students and faculty to have a platform to help farmers uplift their life conditions using Design Thinking and Social Innovation technologies. The two-year commitment included an initial training held in Singapore PolyU earlier this year, with faculty members from the , , and participating.

A licensing agreement was signed with Santeh Feeds Corporation, represented by Chairman Phillip Ong and Administrative Officer Dhonna Noreiga. Santeh, one of the leading feeds manufacturers in the country, provides UST with its first licensing agreement. Santeh will adopt and market the JAMP Primer, a diagnostic tool used for early detection of the white spot syndrome virus in shrimps.

The primer was developed by marine biologist (Principal Investigator), while the device was developed by faculty members Patrick Ellis Z. Go, PhD and Erica Ocampo. Finally, D&L Industries, represented by Managing Director Lester Lao, Technical Director Ms. Sonia Salvador, Market Development Manager Glenn Apostol, and Consultant David Peñaloza, Jr., entered an agreement with UST to “develop academic and research cooperation on the basis of equality and reciprocity and to promote relations and mutual understanding between both parties.”

According to the DOST-PCIEERD website, TBI is a process of nurturing business start-ups in techno-enterprise and is an ecosystem where innovation is promoted and supported toward commercialization. As a host of a TBI, UST’s DOST – TOMASInno Center will be a facility where start-ups are hosted and business development services are provided. Among the services provided are technical assistance, intellectual property management and legal counseling services, and analytical laboratory services, among others.
