Several academic staff of the UST-Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy were appointed as members to the Professional Regulatory Board of Accountancy’s (PRBOA) Technical Working Group (TWG) on the Certified Public Accountants Licensure Examination (CPALE) Enhancement Project.

Dean Patricia M. Empleo, PhD was appointed as Chair of the TWG on Business Environment and Concepts, while Assistant Dean Francisco M. Caliwan, Jr., MSPA, and Assoc. Prof. Antonio J. Dayag, PhD were appointed as Members of the TWG on Financial Accounting and Reporting. Moreover, Asst. Prof. Enrico D. Tabag and Atty. Tristan L. Lopez were appointed as Members of TWG on Tax Compliance and Planning, while Inst. Francisco H. Villamin, Jr. DBA was appointed as Member of the TWG on Auditing and Attestation. The TWG members took their oath on December 18, 2023 at the PRC Office, Philippine International Convention Center.

The TWG is taked to revise the syllabi and table of specifications of the Philippine CPALE and align it with the examination given by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Currently, the AICPA examination is comprised of two modules called core and discipline. The core module contains three compulsory parts (courses), namely: Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) and Regulation (REG). The disciple module contains three optional parts (courses), namely: Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), Information Systems and Control (ISC) and Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP). Philippine examinees will take all six. The AICPA-based examination is set to be given starting the October 2028 CPALE.

Asst. Prof. Antonio J. Dayag, PhD, a faculty member of the UST-Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy, joined the country’s roster of 96 ASEAN CPAs, in a virtual recognition ceremony held on July 31, 2021 on the occasion of the 2nd ASEAN CPA Conference.

Out of over 200,000 CPAs in the country, Dayag joined the club of ASEAN CPAs last June 30. The recognition adds to the accolades Dayag already enjoys. He was one of the recipients of the First PICPA Award for Accountancy Authors in 2018, and has been named Fellow/Member in bodies such as the Association of International Accountants, Institute of Public Accountants, and the Institute of Financial Accountants.

Being no stranger to professional circles, Dayag has been an official of the National Association of Certified Public Accountants in Education (NACPAE), as National President (2016), Vice-President – External (2015), and Adviser (2017). He likewise served in various committees of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants from 2016-2017.

Dayag earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting in UST in 1988, his master’s in business administration in 2009, and his doctorate degree in commerce in 2019. Since 1989, he has been a faculty member of UST and from 1999 to 2005 was the University’s Chief Accountant.

Asst. Prof. Antonio J. Dayag, PhD of the is the 2020 Outstanding Certified Public Accountant in Education of the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants. The conferment ceremonies took place on November 26, 2020, during the 75th PICPA Annual National Convention.

According to the citation, Dayag received the recognition for “his outstanding achievements and distinguished performance as a professional lecturer, educator, author, and CPA reviewer; for being a valuable contributor and focal person in various accounting education programs, committees, and institutions that merited him numerous citations and recognitions in the academe; for his exceptional leadership and significant involvement in numerous activities and advocacies geared towards the advancement of the accountancy profession, such as PICPA Education Sector and nACPAE; and for his continuous participation in various capacities in the projects of PICPA.”

Dayag teaches Cost Accounting and Management Advisory Services at UST, where he also earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting, his master’s in business administration, and his doctorate in commerce. He was also UST’s Chief Accountant from 1999-2005 and in such capacity served as member of the budget, hospitalization, tuition fee, and computerization committees.

This latest feather on his cap adds to his previous recognitions, such as the UST-AMV Alumni Association Accountancy Achiever Award – Private Practice Sector for the Category of the Academe, and a service award (25 years) for his continued teaching in UST, first in the College of Commerce and now in the UST-AMV College of Accountancy. In 2018, PICPA awarded him the “.”

Dayag co-authored books in Cost Accounting in 1999 and authored “CPA Reviewer in Practical Accounting 2” & “Advanced Financial Accounting & Reporting” since 2002.

Dean Patricia M. Empleo, PhD and Asst. Prof. Antonio J. Dayag of the received the first Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) Awards for Accountancy Authors, held at Shangri-la Hotel, Mandaluyong City on December 13, 2018.

The awardees, all authors of various accounting textbooks, were recognized for their contribution to the accountancy profession in the Philippines by being instrumental to the acquisition of knowledge by students and industry practitioners alike.

This award is a project of the Library and Archives Committee, one of the national committees of the PICPA.
