The National Catechetical Study 2021 (NCS 2021), a five-year collaboration between UST’s Research Center for Social Sciences and Education and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education, turned over its seven-volume output as part of the Pastoral Action Research and Intervention (PARI) Project. The output consists of four catechetical modules and three research-based outputs, namely, a book of research poems, a handbook on Catechetical Ministry, and a research monograph.

The turnover of the books was led by University officials led by the Chancellor, Very Rev. fr. Gerard Francisco P. Timoner III, O.P., Vice-Chancellor Very Rev. fr. Filemon I. dela Cruz, Jr., O.P., and Rector Very Rev. fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P. The officials were joined by Project Lead Professor Clarence M. Batan, PhD, who in his speech proudly presented the output as “our University’s ambag for the Catholic Church.” According to Batan, the study’s outputs “lead to the path of New Evangelization and the insightful discovery of the catechist in all of us.”

Chancellor Timoner

Receiving the books were bishops of the Philippines, led by Most Rev. Roberto Mallari, D.D., Chair of the CBCP-ECCCE, who were present during the three-day Ambag 500 Retreat at the Santísimo Rosario Parish Church.

Apart from the PARI project, the NCS 2021 likewise implemented Research-based Intervention Outcome initiatives that introduced various strategies such as family, digital, youth, adult, bible, and creative catechesis “to re-energize the Catechetical Ministry across Ecclesiastical Territories.” All the outputs of the project may be accessed through: .

The National Catechetical Study research team, led by Professor Clarence M. Batan, PhD, recently launched the virtual book entitled “Katekistang Malikhain: Mga Turong-Gabay sa Gawaing Katekesis,” in time for the celebration of the Feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The launch, which took place via YouTube on January 28, 2022, brought together the ideas and expertise of various pedagogues and catechists to produce the book.

The latest output of the NCS 2021 project

In his introduction, Batan said that the book was the output of combined inputs from the catechists’ stories, stories of pedagogy, stories of holiness, and creative catechesis. The book mixes the use of parables, lectures, prayers, conversations, poems, dance, songs, theater, and visuals as part of the pedagogical armament of catechists as they carry out their ministry in their respective areas.

A key feature of the book is the “retablo” of saints and blessed who were known catechists and thus serve as role models for those continuing the ministry.

The book is the fourth of a projected seven-part series of books/modules arising from The National Catechetical Study (NCS) 2021: Pastoral Action Research and Intervention (PARI) Project jointly carried out by UST’s Research Center for Social Sciences and Education and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education.

The book was edited by Batan, along with associate editors Keith Aaron T. Joven, Joan Cristi T. Bagaipo, PhD, Renniel Jayson J. Rosales, Leonardo O. Quimson, Jr, MA, and Jonathan James O. Cañete. Joining them in the project were Christine C. Balmceda, Ser Allan G. Bodoraya, Tricia Mae V. Cruz, MA, Arthur G. Octubre, Ma. Elena P. Octubre, Abigael Maitim-Padilla, Maria Corazon C. Sanin, MA, and Mc Kyle F. Vilaz.

The latest work can be downloaded in .pdf format via:

Meanwhile, the Online Launch, which includes presentations from the authors and editors, can be seen on the project’s YouTube Channel:

The National Catechetical Study group of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education, in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines in partnership with the Digital Evangelization Network PH (DevNet), recently piloted the use of the “God’s Park” mobile app, a child-friendly catechesis app developed by Ichthys Digital Initiatives LLC, for young Catholics preparing to receive their first Holy Communication.

God’s Park

The app, which is downloadable on both the App Store and Google Play Store, had its pilot run in the Dioceses of Balanga, Cabanatuan, Cubao, Daet, Dumaguete, Novaliches, and Archdiocese of Davao. It aimed to fill the gap in catechetical instruction caused by movement and gathering restrictions as a result of the pandemic.

With focus on preparing for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the app rollout, which was sponsored by the said dioceses, recruited children who are not enrolled in schools but are preparing to receive their first Holy Communion. A catechist was designated to guide the students, who after using the app meet the catechist virtually to understand better what the app presented.

The National Catechetical Study has been a project of the UST-RCSSEd, with its lead researcher Professor Clarence M. Batan, PhD, for several years now. It is conducted in partnership with the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education.

of the of the presented papers and served as program coordinator and session organizer at the XIX World Congress of Sociology of the International Sociological Association held at Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Toronto, Canada from July 15-21, 2018.

Batan presented two papers, first on his research expertise on istambay phenomenon entitled, Unearthing Structural & Symbolic Violences in the Lives of Filipino Istambays, and second, as a documenter of history of Philippine Sociology entitled, Recent Developments and Prospects in the Teaching, Training and Practice of Sociology in the Philippines.

The first paper interrogated the concept of structural and symbolic violences in the lives of selected self-reported Filipino istambays (on standbys) in relation to the widely perceived notion of “waithood” particularly experienced during youthhood, locally known in the Philippines as the “istambay” phenomenon. Using life course data from the Social Investigation on the Lives of Istambays in the Philippines (SILIP) project covering four marginalized research sites, this study examined how an istambay experiences constitute, shape, and influence what may be considered as experiences of violence impacting specifically their education and employment life trajectories. The paper argued that the limited education and employment experiences (and the lack thereof) of selected istambay respondents unravels both structural and symbolic violences that entrench the stereotypical perception of their idleness and inactivity. These violences appeared to constitute and engender varying dynamics of social interruptions that these istambays encounter, negotiate, and to some, able to overcome. The paper concludes with some research insights on how further analysis of violences and social interruptions as working concepts may offer new avenues in studying istambay phenomenon in the country.

The second paper interrogated on the history and development of Philippine Sociology in the context of Global South discourse. It directs attention to (a) contexts– the recent developments and prospects in the teaching, training and practice of Sociology in the Philippines; (b) contentions – the critical space of knowledge production and disputes between local and international sociologies; and (c) commitments – the promise of Sociology in responding to better understand contemporary social problems impinging Philippine society in relation to the global world. Using archival documents and ethnographic observations, this paper argues that while state regulation in the teaching and training of Sociology has relatively been in place, the pursuit to develop a more-grounded and contextualized Philippine Sociology (in terms of theory and methods) remains wanting. In so doing, the examination dives and thrives into Global South discourse to make sense of what Philippine Sociology has become and what it would be in the future.

Batan also served as program coordinator of the RC34 Sociology of Youth panels and as session organizer of Migration, Mobilities and Borders with youth sociologists from France, China, Spain, and Japan.

Batan is Vice-President for Asia of the Research Committee (RC) 34 – Sociology of Youth (2014-2018) and President of the Philippine Sociological Society (2017-2018).

The World Congress of Sociology brings together more than 5,000 sociologists and social scientists every four years. The next world congress will be held at Melbourne, Australia on 2022.

A study that investigated the current state of catechetical ministry in the Philippines from the perspectives of Filipino catechists and catechetical leaders was presented by Dr. Clarence Batan during the 117th CBCP Plenary assembly at Pope Pius Center XII UN Avenue, Manila.

A commissioned research of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) – Episcopal commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education (ECCCE) to the University of Santo Tomas’ (UST) Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSED), the study gathered about 25, 905 surveyed catechists and 303 catechetical leaders validated for analysis. This is a National Catechetical Study that covers the years 2016 to 2018.

The presentation highlighted the value and importance of the catechetical ministry and its catechist, even more now when the faith is being attacked. As given emphasis to the Bishops during the presentation, “Kayamanan ng Simbahan ang mga Katekista”. The UST NCS Research Team had presented the national catechetical study on the state of catechetical leaders and the comparative report between national results and each of the dioceses during the archdiocese/diocese catechetical annual assembly in each of the different areas namely, Tuguegarao, Balanga, Davao (Davao, Digos, Tagum, and Mati), and Caceres. Likewise, this was presented during the 18 th Annual Meeting of Catechetical Ministers and the Philippines Conference on New Evangelization (PCNE) 5. The assembly was attended by thousands of catechists and catechetical directors/coordinators.

The Research team, which is composed of Clarence M. Batan, Ph.D. (Project Leader); co-lead Joan Christi S. Trocio-Bagaipo, Ph.D. (co-leader); Florence C. Navidad, Ed.D. (co-leader); Ma. Cecilia L. Balajadia, (researcher); Louell V. Baldoza (researcher); Dennis Ian B. Sy (researcher); Joanne C. Santiago (research assistant); and Arthur Ace B. Malatag (research assistant). With seven project consultants namely, His Excellency Most. Rev. Roberto Mallari, D.D. (CBCP-ECCCE Chair); Sr. Ma. Jesusa Enginco, O.P.; Msgr. Gerardo Santos; Fr. Renato de Guzman, S.D.B.; Fr. Salvatore Putzu, S.D.B.; and, Dr. Linda Tacord, the research team still has an upcoming series of presentations of the national catechetical state as compared to their ecclesiastical territories such as Manila and Sorsogon.

With the theme “Gurong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad” (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng UST (Honor of UST) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

“Napakalaki ang nagawa at naiambag ng mg Tomasinong guro sa mga ma-tagumpay na Tomasino. Sigurado ako na kabilang kayo sa inspirasyon ng mga mag-aaral sa kanilang pagsusumikap na makamit at matupad ang kanilang mga pangarap. Hindi lamang iyan maliit na bagay,” Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message. “Pinapatunayan ito ng napakaraming mahuhusay at kapuri-puring indibidwal na mula sa iba’t-ibang larangan na nagmula sa ating pamantasan,”

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in UST as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. “Sila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,” he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle “repeater sections” and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: “Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. Marami akong mag-aaral na nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng ginawa ng dati kong mga guro sa UST.”

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng UST, except the Gawad Benavides).
