Inst. Kane Errol C. Choa, MA, MSc, APR of theDepartment of Communication and Media Studieswas named as the new chief of International Association of Business Communicators Asia Pacific Region (IABC APAC). Previously, he served as the institution’s vice chair and awards director. Choa assumed his new post on July 1, 2023.

At present, he also serves as the vice president of ABS-CBN’s Corporate Communications.

Apart from his role in media institutions, Choa is an educator in the Faculty of Arts and Letters, where he teaches Broadcast Journalism in the said department.

Composed of 11 chapters in 8 countries in the Asia-Pacific region, IABC APAC organizes the Fusion regional conference, the Silver Quill Awards, and the Communicator of the Year Awards.

Meanwhile, IABC is a recognized professional association that links communicators worldwide belonging to diverse industries and disciplines, aiming to seek and to deliver the world’s best communication practices.

On Feb. 25, 2023, UST, though the Communications Bureau’s Tiger Media Network, the official student-run broadcast arm of UST, bagged a total of six awards in the 83rd Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) College Media Conference, held at Sheraton Times Square in New York City, USA.

UST Tiger TV received five awards in the said conference.

The Facebook page UST Tiger TV was hailed as the “Best Social Media Account.” Four more recognitions came in the form of the Len Mallioux Management awards, which were conferred upon:

1) Charlene Beatrice Go (UST College of Fine Arts and Design – TMN)- Best Creatives Services Director, Television – College Division

2) Janis Andriella Santiago (UST Faculty of Arts and Letters – TMN)- Best Student Station Manager, Television – College Division

3) Asst. Prof. Faye Martel-Abugan, MA (Communications Bureau; TMN adviser)- Best Faculty Advisor, Television – College Division

4) Angelica Mendoza (UST College of Commerce and Business Administration) – Best Promotions Director – Television – College Division

The Len Mallioux Management award is bestowed by IBS, a network of academe-related media broadcasting organizations.

Meanwhile, Tiger Radio bagged the sixth award and was named the “Best Streaming/Online-Only Radio Station for schools with more than 10,000 students”.

The Tiger Media Network is the official broadcasting arm of the University that operates under the supervision of the Communications Bureau. TMN produces content through Tiger TV with the use of internet protocol television (IPTV) and through Tiger Radio, the University’s e-radio airing via Mixlr.

The ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance has given its stamp of approval to four more bachelor’s programs of the University, namely the BA Communication, BA Journalism, BS Hospitality Management (with specializations in Hospitality Leadership and Culinary Entrepreneurship), and BS Tourism Management (with specializations in Travel Operation and Service Management and Recreation and Leisure Management), following the remote visit conducted in July 2022. The four programs, which were assessed during the 245h AUN-QA Programme Assessment are housed in the Faculty of Arts and Letters – Department of Communication and Media Studies (BA Communication and BA Journalism) and the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (BS Hospitality Management and BS Tourism Management).

The assessor team was composed of Prof. Dr. Satria Bijaksana, AUN-QA Council Member and Chief Assessor, Asst. Prof. Dr. Sharul Tazrajiman Hj Tajuddin, Prof. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Riza Atiq Abdullah Bin O.K. Rahmat, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Tuan, Dr. Le Thi Giao Chi, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vongdeuan Osay, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pornpun Prajaknate, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chailerd Pichitpornchai.

The assessment looked into how the program is being delivered, as envisioned in the University’s and programs’ vision, mission, goals, objectives, and outcomes, and how these are realized through the manpower and material resources provided by the University. The multi-stakeholder consultations included in the assessment proper involved University officials, the academic staff, the support personnel, students, alumni, and employers.

With the new recognition, eighteen of UST’s bachelor’s programs now have the AUN-QA’s nod. The first fourteen programs are BS Accountancy, BS Biochemistry, BS Biology, BS Chemical Engineering, BS Chemistry, Bachelor of Elementary Education, BS Electronics Engineering, BS Medical Technology, BS Nursing, BS Occupational Therapy, BS Physical Therapy, BS Psychology, and Bachelor of Secondary Education.

Through the efforts of Thomasian students from different academic units and student organizations, the University of Santo Tomas bagged 28 awards in the 9th Philippine Student Quill Awards, organized by the IABC Philippines, on August 20, 2022 in a virtual event.

In an announcement released by , 28 entries from the University of Santo Tomas stood out among the 800 entries in the 9th Philippines Student Quill Awards.

Moreover, the 11 of the 28 awards received by the University were from the student volunteers of the Tiger Media Network, the student volunteer arm of the Communications Bureau.

Research Center for Culture, Arts, and Humanities researcher Asst. Prof. Gwenetha Y. Pusta, PhD and Asst. Prof. Jose Arsenio J. Salandanan, MA, both faculty members of the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, were elected to the board of trustees of the Philippine Association of Communications Education (PACE). The announcement was posted on October 10, 2021 on the Facebook page of .

Both Pusta and Salandanan will serve in the board until 2023.

Specializing in communication and media studies, Pusta handles diverse subjects such as Marketing Communications, Communication and Socio-cultural Change, Broadcast Journalism, and Communication Research. She is serving as a two-term member of The Commission on Higher Education – Regional Quality Assessment Team of the Office of Programs and Standards. She has also held leadership posts in the Philippine-based professional organizations, namely: Trustee of the Philippine Association of Communication Educators Foundation, Inc.; Board of Director of the Philippine Communications Society; and Board Member of the International Society for Third Sector Research.

Meanwhile, Salandanan is serving as the Chairperson of the Department of Communication and Media Studies. A seasoned public relations practitioner who brings his expertise to the academe, he teaches Integrated Marketing Communication. At present, he is also suiting up as the PACE Vice-President for Luzon.

Founded in 1975, PACE is a non-stock and non-profit organization of professionals engaged in communication education and media practice in the Philippines. Moreover, it has been the forefront of activities focused on the review of policies and standards for communication education and ethical practice in the teaching and media professions.

Last August 1-7, 2015, Hong Kong Polytechnic University housed the 6th University Scholars Leadership Symposium, hosted by Humanitarian Affairs UK. The sixth installment of the symposium bore the theme “Enrich. Educate. Enlighten.”

The participants’ learning journey was comprised of talks and addresses from the Prof. Angelina Yuen, Acting President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; Hon. Matthew Cheung Kin-Chung, Minister for Labor and Welfare of Hong Kong; and Hon. Tony Simpson, Minister for Youth for Western Australia, among others.Facilitators of the program stressed that the scholars had the chance to be “change makers” and by doing so live purposeful lives. This, it was stressed, was complemented by “the joy of giving.” As future leaders, participants were made to understand the importance of goal setting and chasing after their dreams.
