UST Research Center for Culture, Arts and Humanities Director Prof. Joyce Arriola, Ph.D., and professor at the Faculty of Arts and Letters and the Graduate School, presented a paper during the 3rd Annual Memory Studies Conference held recently at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain (Universidad Complutense de Madrid). The conference addressed the theory and practice of the study of memory texts and performances from their historical and cultural perspectives.

Arriola’s paper titled “The Filipino Komiks-to-Film Genre as Memory Work: Lapu-Lapu (1954) and the ‘Third’ Imaginary” was presented under the panel ‘Memory Studies in Southeast Asian Contexts.’ The study tackled historical, comic book and filmic representations of both the Lapu-Lapu story and the first encounter between Spanish colonizers and the natives in 1521. It showed how historical facts are linked with the quasi-historical and the fictitious in order to produce a new imaginary. Created in 1950 by National Artist for Visual Art, Francisco Coching, the comic magazine serialization of Lapu-Lapu in Pilipino Komiks produced one of the most artful and beguiling iconographies connected to the said historical figure. The 1954 film adaptation by Lamberto Avellana, National Artist for Film, expanded the popular imaginary by rendering it into moving images and enhancing the iconography already made salient by the comic series.

The panel in which Arriola read her paper was the only one that addressed memory from the Southeast Asian perspective. She read her paper alongside panel chair, Dr. Jocelyn Martin of Ateneo de Manila University and Dr. Kar Yen Leong of Tamkang University. The more specific area of Arriola’s paper falls under mediality of memory and performativity of filmic memory, particularly the role of what Martin Lefevre refers to as “memoria” and “figura.”

As an intersection between mediated memory and adaptation studies, the paper, according to Arriola’s abstract, addressed the following points of analysis: “1) The function of the historical record in the fictional rendering; 2) The role of fictionalizing act in rendering the historical event; 3) The conversation between the komiks source and the film adaptation in exploring the mediality and performativity of memory; and 4) The komiks-to-film adaptation as venue to create a ‘third’ imaginary, the historical record being first, the komiks second, and the film version third.”

The Memory Studies Conference is convened annually by the Memory Studies Association. The first conference was held in the Netherlands and the second was in Denmark. This year’s conference in Madrid was participated in by some 1,500 scholars and practitioners. The Universidad Complutense de Madrid was a fitting host to this conference, being a historic site of some of the most violent episodes of the Spanish Civil War, and being itself a storehouse of memory of the said country.

Memory Studies conferences are interdisciplinary in nature and encourage discourses on the subject as this has been communicated or performed in various platforms and modalities and as these address the theory and politics particular to such.

Arriola’s participation in the conference was partly subsidized by the University of Santo Tomas and the Philippine Social Science Council.

Newly-elected Master of the Order of Preachers and University of Santo Tomas Chancellor Very Rev. Fr. Gerard Francisco P. Timoner III, O.P., presided over the Eucharistic Celebration in honor of the Founder of the Order of Preachers. Concelebrated with the Dominican Fathers, the Mass was held on August 7, the eve of the Feast Day of St. Dominic de Guzman, at the Church (UST Chapel) and was attended by the Thomasian community.

Fr. Timoner expressed his enthusiasm at presiding over the annual St. Dominic Mass, because “I want to give thanks to my alma mater, the University of Santo Tomas, who helped prepare me for the ministries entrusted to me all these years.”

The 88th Master of the Order, who obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Theology from the University in 1994, hoped that “UST is glad to count me as one of its sons,” and asked the Thomasian community to “pray for me in this ministry of being Dominic to the Order.” He is the second UST professor to become Master of the Order, the first being the martyr Blessed Buenaventura García Paredes, O.P.

Fr. Timoner credited Very Rev. Fr. Bruno Cadoré, O.P., the immediately preceding Master, with giving him advice. “He told me, ’Just continue to be Brother Gerard, but remember your ministry is to be Dominic.’ Another important advice he gave me was: ‘You must learn how to adjust your happiness.’”

On the ministry of preaching, Fr. Timoner reminded the faithful that when Jesus sent his disciples in pairs to preach the Good News, he told his followers to travel “lightly and hastily,” without bags or sandals, and to shake the dust off their feet if they are rejected. He explained that “While a sandal or a tunic or bag symbolize the good things we have to carry, the dust on our feet symbolizes the negative and toxic memories we should not carry, yet we could not easily shake off from our lives.”

“If all Christians are to become effective bearers of the Good News, then we must take care that no bad news, no toxic memory will ever contaminate the goodness of the Gospel.”

The Master cited Pope Francis’ apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), saying “’We can only preach the Gospel convincingly if we do so joyously.’ Saint Dominic was called a man of the Gospel who preached convincingly because according to those who lived with him, he was a joyful friar.”

To “shake the dust from our feet” or to do away with toxic baggage that can weaken the joy of sharing the Good News, Fr. Timoner advised “The best way to heal is through reconciliation.”

Fr. Timoner explained, “The Eucharist shows us that to forgive is precisely not about forgetting but it is about remembering in a different way. [When Jesus said] ‘Do this in memory of me,’ Jesus was not asking us to forget that night in which He was betrayed. He was asking us to remember in a different way. The pain of betrayal and the violence of the Cross are not forgotten, but remembered in a different way. A wise Dominican said: ‘Forgiveness is not forgetting Good Friday. It is the Father raising the Son on Easter Sunday.’”

“[During the Last Supper] Jesus took it upon Himself to cleanse [the Apostles’] feet of all this dust. Yes, it was an act of humility and hospitality, but it was also a gesture that prepared the Apostles to proclaim the Good News uncontaminated by any dust. When we find it utterly difficult to forgive, to be reconciled, or to let go of a painful memory, we ask Jesus to wash our feet as well: ‘Lord, wash my feet. Cleanse me of all the dust that have accumulated through the years,’” said the new successor of St. Dominic.

A procession of the image of St. Dominic inside the campus followed the Mass. It was led by UST Vice Rector for Religious Affairs Rev. Fr. Pablo Tiong, O.P., and attended by the members of the Thomasian community and parishioners.

Ƶ of Santo Tomas formally welcomed almost 15,000 Thomasians for the Academic Year 2019-2020 through the Thomasian Welcome Walk held on August 6, 2019 at the Arch of the Centuries.

The rite of passage, a much-anticipated Thomasian tradition, formally marks the beginning of a freshman’s academic life. The tradition involves walking through the Arch of the Centuries, the original entryway of the University when it was still located in Intramuros. When UST transferred to its present site in Sampaloc, it was brought piece by piece and reassembled in its current campus. The original walkway faces the Main Building while a replica faces España Blvd.

The iconic structure is now known as the “Arch of the Centuries” and was declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2010. It is a favorite spot to meet important University guests that include Pope Francis, who walked through the Arch upon his arrival at the University where he was met by the UST Rector

UST Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., led the morning and afternoon batches of the parade of freshmen as they passed through the Arch of the Centuries. Two Eucharistic Celebrations, concelebrated with the Dominican Fathers and with the Welcome Rite integrated, were held at the Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena. UST Vice Rector Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., was the main celebrant for the morning Mass, while UST Rector Very Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P., presided in the afternoon Mass.

Fr. Ang, in his homily, said that “UST has more than 400 years of excellence, but it is forever young because of new faces, fresh insights, and innovative ideas. I am happy that your entrance into the campus will result in a whole new synergy, making us truly a 21st century, forward-looking educational institution.”

During the Eucharistic celebration that was held in the afternoon, Fr. Dagohoy mentioned in his homily that the cyclical journey of Thomasians – of entering the Arch as freshmen and exiting the Arch after the Baccalaureate Mass, and of joining the welcome rites at the Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena and graduating at the same venue four or five years later – began that momentous day.

Fr. Dagohoy further advised the new Thomasians, “When your journey becomes tight and you want to stop, don’t. Pray to God that he may send you someone who will assure you of the beauty of your distant future. Pray that God may speak to you: in your dreams, in your vision, and even in your deep sleep. Is it possible? Yes. Because you too, are God’s beloved children with whom God is so pleased.”

The Father Rector concluded his homily with the words “Welcome to the Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas, where champions in life are born.”

Mass offerings, presented by student representatives from each of the Faculties, Colleges, Institutes, and Schools, were for the benefit of the continuingTulong TomasinoProgram of the .

After the Thomasian Welcome Walk, another highly-anticipated event was the ROARientation, the general orientation for freshmen in the tertiary level. It was also conducted in two batches, one in the morning and another in the afternoon of August 13 held at the Quadricentennial Pavilion arena.

The ROARientation was not only informative in nature but was an entertainment treat for the new students as well. It showcased the talents of the University such as the UST Yellow Jackets, UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, Mediartix, Teatro Tomasino, UST Singers and the Conservatory of Music Wind Orchestra, Tiger TV, to name a few, where they performed before an appreciative crowd.

In his welcome message to the freshmen, UST Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., introduced the Thomasian core values also known as the 3Cs – competence, compassion and commitment. He also told them of the Thomasian attributes with the acronym of SEAL that stands forServant leader,Effective communicator and collaborator,Analytical and creative thinker, andLifelong learner.

Information on the history of the University, the lives of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Dominic de Guzman were presented through a short play, videos, and an animated feature. Facilities, such as the student activity center housed at the Tan Yan Kee Student Center, were introduced to the students through a video presentation. The Guidance Counselors spoke on Mental Health, and the ‘TIGER Way,’ an acronym of tips for coping with college life. The officers of the Central Student Council and the Student Organization Coordinating Council gave the new Thomasians assurance that there are people that they can depend on, such as their student council officers and other student leaders.

Ensuring the safety and security of the students is of vital importance to the University. A video featuring the UST Security officers showed tips on how to avoid becoming victims to unlawful elements was shown. PSSg. Johnrie Jayme, a police officer from the Sampaloc command post, also spoke on how students can prevent crimes from taking place – by not giving the suspect the opportunity to make a victim out of themselves. The officer also assured his audience that the police force is doing its best to protect the students from unlawful elements.

Program hosts were student leaders.

The freshmen of the Education High School, Junior High School, and Senior High School held an oreintation calledAlabon August 7. The Eucharistic Celebration for the new high school students was presided by UST Vice Rector for Religious Affairs Rev. Fr. Pablo T. Tiong, O.P.

Ƶ of Santo Tomas formally opened the Academic Year 2019-2020 with the traditional Mass of the Holy Spirit at the UST Santísimo Rosario Parish Church (UST Chapel) at 9:00 a.m. on August 1, 2019.

Incoming Chair of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Episcopal Commission on Youth and Bishop of Daet Most Rev. Rex Andrew C. Alarcon, D.D., was the main presider of the opening mass that was concelebrated with the Dominican Fathers and attended by the Thomasian community.

In his homily, Bishop Alarcon reminded the Thomasians that despite the innumerable advantages of living in the age of information, having access to “multiple, varied, diverse, plural [information can] also lead to confusion, ambiguity, and complexity.”

“We even face the difficulty of ascertaining which is true and which is fake. We live in a multiplicity of culture. We are aware of the differences of our viewpoints and approaches, there is divergence in our departmental culture, but we are called to work interdependently,” he said.

Bishop Alarcon urged the faithful to find unity in shared humanity despite differences in viewpoints and approaches, and in this dawn of the fourth industrial revolution, he expressed his desire for the community to see the need to get in touch with our common humanity, recognize the complexity around us, and find hope in the possibility of working together. He emphasized that “Our differences, our varied strengths, are an invitation to work together.”

Despite the concerns brought about by advances in the twenty-first century, the Bishop preached on hope. He spoke of the “new windows and doors that allow us to confront new realities and offer new solutions, and the need to begin with courage and trust, and not simply in our human capacities, but in the genius and generosity of He who fashioned us in His image and likeness.”

Bishop Alarcon studied Theology at the University of Santo Tomas and obtained his licentiate in Church History at the Gregorian University in Rome. He considered the chance to preside in the opening mass as a homecoming and a chance to see his former mentors among the Dominican priests who concelebrated the Mass with him.

The Eucharistic Celebration at UST, more popularly known as Misa de Apertura among Thomasians, was immediately followed by the Discurso de Apertura, an academic lecture which is traditionally delivered before faculty members and students of the University. The Discurso de Apertura was first delivered in 1866 and has since been delivered by Thomasian academic leaders in their areas of expertise.

Discurso de Apertura

UST Faculty of Medicine and Surgery Professor Maria Minerva P. Calimag, M.D., Ph.D., delivered the 2019 Discurso de Apertura on “Research and the Social Agenda: The Tale of Two Rivers.”

A multi-awarded researcher, medical doctor Calimag emphasized in her academic lecture that as large consumers of energy and water, healthcare activities have a significant negative climate impact. Even as modern medicine heals individual persons, production, disposable life cycle, and acquisition of medical equipment, materials, food, medicines, and other consumable goods are the health sector element with the largest carbon footprint.

Calimag cited an example within her own field of anesthesiology. Despite the benefits of pain management, “In a 20-year timeframe, the widely used inhaled anesthetic gas nitrous oxide, and the halogenated hydrofluorocarbons anesthetic vapors isoflurane, desoflurane, and sevoflurane have global warming potentials hundreds of times higher than carbon dioxide. It was estimated that the annual global climate impact of anesthetic agents, as equivalent to carbon dioxide emissions from 1 million cars.”

It has been her advocacy to talk about climate change in order to preserve health and ensure food security. In helping to make the planet a better place for all, Calimag said that she endorses the salutogenic approach whereby “people can become healthier when they view life as comprehensible, manageable and meaningful.”

Calimag said that personal and planetary health are fundamentally interconnected. Since the root causes of ill health in individuals parallel the root causes of the converging crises that are affecting the ailing planet, she further explained that, “health cannot be sustained without addressing what is needed throughout the interconnected system of our lives – ourselves as individuals, our physical health, psychological health, relationships with our family, communities, and the environment.”

Having taught in the University for more than 30 years, Calimag, whose children are also in the field of medicine, expressed her pride in UST’s compassionate legacy, saying “We at the University of Santo Tomas train future leaders who will continue to nurture our society into a vibrant future.  We are action researchers. We encourage inclusivity and we continue to work on studies that create opportunities to promote healthy behaviors and safety.”

Calimag is the former President of the Philippine Medical Association (2014-2016). She obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Santo Tomas in 1981, and her doctoral degree in Educational Management and Leadership from the same University in 2011. In 2010, she received the International Award for Excellence in Developing Countries for Basic Science by the International Association for the Study of Pain. In 2017, she was granted the Outstanding Book Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology as one of the authors of the “Encyclopedia of Common Medicinal Plants in the Philippines, volume 1,” an award shared with UST Vice Rector for Research and Innovation Prof. Maribel Nonato, Ph.D., who is also a co-author.

Four faculty members from the Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Letters presented their respective academic research papers at the 14th Biennial Conference of the International Association of Forensic Linguists (IAFL) held at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University in Melbourne, Australia from July 1 to 5, 2019.

Paper presenters were Dean Prof. Marilu R. Madrunio, Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. Rachelle B. Lintao, Ph.D., Asst. Prof. Josephine B. Alarcon, and Asst. Prof. Raquel R. Jimenez. They worked on forensic linguistics (FL) studies, a new and fertile area of research in applied linguistics.

Dean Madrunio’s presentation was a colloborative research between her and her former mentee, Ms. Sabina Maria Mabutas, who is now a law student at the UST Faculty of Civil Law. Prior to the conference, Lintao, Jimenez, and Dean Madrunio participated in workshops on ‘Forensic Interviewing: Developing International Standards and Forensic Linguistics for Teachers’ under Dr. Georgina Heydon, a forensic linguist at the RMIT University, whose specialization is on police interrogation and investigation.

The four English faculty members were joined by students under the UST English Language Studies (ELS) who recently graduated and whose theses were in line with forensic linguistics research.  They were: Aaron Tom de Guia, Phamela Edralin, and Danielle Nicole Rosario. Michelle Marasigan, a graduate of ELS in 2018, likewise presented her research. They were joined by Ms. Elsie Doreen Gersava, a UST Graduate School student who presented her research on police interrogation as part of her Ph.D. degree coursework on Forensic Linguistics.

In a related development, UST Faculty of Arts and Letters Dean Prof. Marilu Rañosa-Madrunio, Ph.D., was recently elected as Ordinary Member of the Board of the International Association of Forensic Linguists (IAFL) for a term of four years. Dean Madrunio and Leung are part of the seven-member Executive Committee tasked to actively contribute to the IAFL’s affairs and take on specific responsibilities to forward the aims and objectives of the Association as well as plan for the future direction of the Association, among others.

The current members of the Executive Committee are: Professor Janet Ainsworth of Seattle University School of Law, Washington, USA (President), Dr. Isabel Picornell of QED Limited, Guernsey, Channel Islands (Vice President), Dr. Tammy Gales of Hosfstra University, New York, USA (Secretary), Dr. Ria Perkins of Aston University, Birmingham, UK (Treasurer), Dr. Rui Sousa-Silva of the Universidade do Porto, Porto, Portugal (Publicity Officer),  Dr. Janny Leung of the University of Hong Kong, (Continuing Ordinary Member) and Prof. Marilu R.
