Eight Thomasian Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering students participated in the 2017 Pure and Applied Chemistry International Conference (PACCON) with the theme, “Green Convergence on Chemical Frontiers” held last February 2-3, 2017 at Centra Government Complex Hotel & Convention Centre, Chaeng Watthana, Bangkok, Thailand.
Cheynne Louise G. Abelardo, Kevin Chad M. Cerezo, and Coleen M. Palicpic received the Best Oral Presentation award with their research entitled “Modified polyurethane foam derived from liquefied coconut husk with incorporated nanoclay for oil adsorption” under Polymer Chemistry cluster. The study is aimed to synthesize a rigid foam medium in lieu of the commercially produced foams to separate oil from oil-water system as to address global environmental issues such as industrial waste problems and oil spills.
Meanwhile, Kerguelen Mae A. Nodora, Jade Dhalle P. Encarnacion, and Joshia Uzziel L. Plandes presented the research, “Optimization of Marshall stability and self-healing property of asphalt mixture using response surface methodology” under the Materials Science cluster. Meanwhile, Franz Joseph Ryle D. Del Valle and Rodel Christian G. Tuppal teamed up in the poster presentation, with their study entitled “Synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from Coffea liberica (Coffee) husk for different high value applications” under the nanotechnology cluster.
The students were accompanied and mentored by their research adviser, Florencio D. de los Reyes, MSc., a faculty member of the UST Chemical Engineering Department. Running as an annual event for eleven years, PACCON continues to gather aspiring students, industry experts and scientists to showcase their research findings adhering to the attainment of sustainable development through “green chemistry”.
PACCON 2017 was composed of 4 plenary lectures, 50 invited talks and approximately 800 technical papers with around 200 oral presentations conducted in 12 sessions and a poster presentation joined by around 1000 participants from local and overseas. This year’s event was sponsored by Chemical Society of Thailand under the Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Mahidol, King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB), and Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau.
