BS Architecture students win in Archinext competition

Three BS Architecture students of the UST College of Architecture landed in the top 10 spots of the ArchiNext HGC Young Designers Competition 2020, for their designs of a community multiplex interactive space.

Bridge Lee led the UST winners, capturing the Grand Prize and the Best Presentation plum for his work entitled “The Bridge.” Bearing the tagline “Bridge the Gap, Close the Loop,” the work envisions a fisherman’s park for Bancal Bay. The design considers four main factors: children’s safety, the livelihood of fisherfolk, sustainability of resources, and the protection of mangroves.

Ranking 7th in the competition is Timothy James Arambulo, who proposed a nature art and commune park called Daungan. The park comes with amenities such as The Ark Library, Art Space Building, Service Building, a playground, and park benches, among others.

Completing the ranks of Thomasian winners is Lorenzo Angelo Mauricio, who placed 9th, with his two-floor underground park, which comes complete with an underground garden and spaces. The work, set in Welcome Rotonda area at the boundary of Manila and Quezon City, aims to provide a walkable space for pedestrians in an urbanized setting.

ArchiNext is a nationwide competition that “raises the bar to challenge ingenuity in a relevant and timely structure that benefits the mass.” This year’s focus, Ugnayan, refers to “the central, holistic public space that aims to nurture learning, recreation, and play at the same time.” According to ArchiNext, the space is envisioned to allow “people to breathe and appreciate nature, art, culture, and interpersonal communication.”
